Winter Driving Tips

Date of News Release: 01/26/2009

(Henderson, KY) The winter driving season is here. Reports for the coming days include a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The Kentucky State Police urge the public to stay off the roads if at all possible. If you find it necessary to travel here are a few winter driving tips.

  • Slow down, the greater your speed the more severe the crash.
  • Increase your following distance
  • If you must travel, let someone know your destination and route
  • Dress warmly, never rely on your vehicle's heater to keep you warm
  • If you become stranded in the snow be sure the exhaust is not obstructed, deadly carbon monoxide can fill the passenger compartment
  • Be sure your vehicle has been properly winterized
  • Have the radiator system serviced and checked for the proper antifreeze level
  • Have the windshield wiper fluid changed to a wintertime mixture
  • Do not engage your cruise control

A wintertime survival kit for your vehicle may include the following:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • Blankets
  • First-aid kit
  • Windshield scraper
  • Jumper cables
  • Bag of sand or cat litter
  • Tire chains
  • Shovel
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Bright colored clothing
  • High calorie snack food

The inclement weather will increase calls for service. Calling the police dispatcher for road conditions may hamper rescue efforts. I urge those people traveling to call the following numbers for up to date road conditions:

  • Kentucky 511or 866-737-3767
  • Indiana 800-261-7623
  • Illinois 800-452-4368
  • Tennessee 800-342-3258

Please drive as though your life depended on it, because it does.
