Update to the Fatal Collision on US HWY 68 in Green County

(Columbia, KY) - Following yesterday's collision, John P. Greene was flown to University Hospital in Louisville where he was treated and released. Further investigation has revealed that alcohol may have been a contributing factor that resulted in a collision leading to the death of Russell A. Greenway.

46-year-old John P. Greene (no photo available) was arrested today at his residence on Airport Road in Russell County and charged with one count of each of the following:

  1. Manslaughter 2nd degree
  2. Operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs/etc .08 (aggravated circumstances) 2nd
  3. Reckless Driving
  4. Failure to give oncoming vehicle ½ of highway

He was lodged in the Taylor County Jail. Tpr. Dewayne Holder is investigating.

Date of News Release: 02/19/2009

(Columbia, KY) - John P. Greene, 46 years of age, of Russell Springs, was operating a 1994 Ford Ranger eastbound on US HWY 68, 2 ½ miles east of Greensburg. Mr. Greene crossed the center line, entered the westbound lane and struck a 2006 Toyota, being operated by Sheila Martinez. Ms. Martinez, 55 years of age, of Greensburg, was wearing a seatbelt and was treated and released at the Jane Todd Crawford Hospital for minor injuries. A passenger in the Ms. Martinez's vehicle, Russell A. Greenway, age 51, of Greensburg, was pronounced deceased by the Green County Coroner at the scene of the collision. Mr. Greenway was also wearing a seatbelt. Mr. Greene, who was not belted, was flown to the University of Louisville, for treatment of his injuries. Criminal charges are pending against Mr. Greene.
