Shooting in Letcher County

(Hazard, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police is investigating a shooting that happened on Susan Cook Drive in the Whitesburg community of Letcher County shortly after 11:00 P.M. on Tuesday night (11/17/09). Paul Richard Fields was shot once in the head by a small caliber rifle. He was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center and listed in critical condition. James Edward Nichols was lodged in the Letcher County Jail, charged with 1st Degree Assault, Burglary 1st Degree, 3 counts of Wanton Endangerment, and being a Felony in Possession of a Firearm. The shooting remains under investigation by Detective Randy Combs with the Hazard Post.
