Kentucky State Police Trooper Involved In Shooting

(Jackhorn, Ky.) -- On 09/25/09 at approximately 11:14 pm Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a call requesting a trooper to conduct a welfare check at the residence of Terry Wayne Taulbee at Leopard Drive in the Jackhorn Community of Letcher County. Trooper Ben McCray responded to the residence and made contact with Mr. Taulbee. Mr. Taulbee displayed a weapon and began to approach Tpr. McCray making threats. Mr. Taulbee was advised to put the weapon down, but he refused to comply with the officers commands. The suspect then raised the weapon in the direction of the trooper. Tpr. McCray fired his service weapon and Terry Wayne Taulbee received fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner. Trooper McCray a 15 year veteran with the Kentucky State Police was not injured and is placed on administrative leave per Kentucky State Police policy and procedure. The investigation is continuing by Lt. Little and assisted by Lt. Welch and Lt.Hatmaker.
