Breathitt County Shooting Investigation

(Hazard, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on Highway 30 East in Jackson. Shortly after 6 pm on August 21st KSP Post in Hazard received a 911 call advising that two neighbors, Randall Carpenter of Jackson and Bill R. Caudill of Jackson, had exchanged gunfire after a verbal argument stemming from a property dispute. Trooper James Gross, CVE Officer Jeff Jacobs, officers from the Breathitt County Sheriffs Department, the Jackson Police Department, and EMS personnel from Trans Star Ambulance responded.

Randall Carpenter suffered a fatal gunshot and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Bill Caudill suffered several gunshot wounds and was transported to the Kentucky River Medical Center and was subsequently airlifted to the UK Medical Center in Lexington. Detective Chuck Bledsoe and Detective Scott Sandlin are investigating the shooting. No charges have been filed at this time.
