Fatal Motorcycle Collision on KY 225 in Knox County

(Artemus, Ky.) -- On 9/01/09 at 11:39 am, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan responded to a fatal crash on KY 225 in the community of Artemus in Knox County. Unit 1 was a Yamaha R6 motorcycle operated by Carl Niccum Jr., age 23 of Barbourville, KY and was traveling north on KY 225. Unit 2 was a CASE backhoe operated by Earnest Sowders, age 44 of Artemus, KY and was stopped northbound on KY 225 attempting to turn left onto Bartin Lane. Unit 1 attempted to pass Unit 2 as Unit 2 was turning left and Unit 1 struck Unit 2 in the left front. The operator of Unit 1 was ejected off of the motorcycle and sustained serious multiple injuries. Knox EMS transported Mr. Niccum to a field where he was flown out to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Mr. Niccum succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:09 pm. This fatal crash is still under investigation by Trooper Shane Jacobs of Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan.
