2009 Trooper Island Campers
Date of News Release: 06/29/09
(Harlan, Ky.) -- Children from Post 10 Harlan and Post 11 London enjoyed time at Trooper Island this past week. Their activities included swimming, fishing, canoeing, archery and nature classes. The 35 acre island is located on Dale Hollow Lake on the Kentucky/Tennessee border. Each Trooper selects children that may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a camp. The camping program is dedicated toward the development of one's self image by building the physical body through nutritious food and exercise, developing mental capabilities with classroom study and providing spiritual growth through non-denominational chapel services. Trooper Island also holds specialized camps each summer. One camp is for Hispanic children, which assists in breaking down the cultural barriers with this growing segment of population and (PKU Camp) children with phenylketonuria, a genetic condition that can cause mental retardation when not treated early in infancy. There is no cost to the campers who attend Trooper Island and there are no restrictions based on race, creed or color. All construction and camping expenses are paid from tax-deductible contributions. Many industries, civic and business groups as well as citizens have provided this program much needed support. The cost averages $300 per child with about 700 children attending the island during the summer each year. Post 10 Harlan will be holding a motorcycle ride at Tri-County Cycle Sales in Corbin, KY on July 11th to help support this effort to keep Trooper Island going. The cost is $30 a bike and there will be food and prizes.
