Fatality on US119 at Cumberland

Cumberland, KY-On February 7, 2009 at 10:14 AM EST Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received a call regarding a two vehicle collision on US 119 in the Cumberland community of Harlan County.

The investigation revealed that Hubert W. Lunsford, 67 yoa of Paint Lick, KY, was operating a 2005 Volvo tractor trailer traveling north on US 119. Mr. Lunsford then crossed over the center line and struck a 2001 Ford van traveling south on US 119. Mr. Lunsford continued north striking an earth embankment. The Ford van was operated by Chester Mullins, 67 years of age of Dorton, KY.

Mr. Lunsford was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County Deputy Coroner Bush. Mr. Mullins and his passenger, Julia Mullins 66 years of age of Dorton, KY, were not injured.

The collision remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Detective Mike Cornett. accident reconstructionist. He was assisted at the scene by Trooper Jeff Anderson, Trooper Ken Abner, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Mark Scott, Tri City Rescue, Cumberland Fire Department, Johnsons Life Care Ambulance and Harlan County Emergency Management.
