Fatal Collision on Mine Access Road in Floyd County

Date of News Release: 03/02/2008

(Pikeville, KY) - On 3/1/2008 at approximately 2231 hours Post 9 received a call of a single vehicle accident with injury on a Mine Access Road in the David community of Floyd County. Upon arrival of responders it was discovered the vehicle had left the roadway and traveled approximately 150 feet over an embankment. All three occupants were ejected from the vehicle, making it undeterminable at this time who the operator of the vehicle was. Mr. Kevin Ousley sustained only minor injuries and was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, KY by Respond Ambulance Service, where he was treated and released. A second occupant, Mr. Joe Poe sustained traumatic head injuries and was airlifted from the scene by PHI Air Medical Service to Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV where he is listed in critical condition. The third occupant Ms. Angela Whitaker suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene by Floyd County Deputy Coroner Greg Nelson. Official Toxicology reports on all three occupants is pending and next of kin has been notified. The accident is still under investigation by Trooper Eric Gibson.
