Death Investigation/Officer Involved Shooting

(Richmond, KY) - The Kentucky State Police is currently conducting an officer involved shooting investigation that occurred on US 27 in Garrard County. On November 22nd at 1:40 a.m., the Jessamine County Sheriff's Department requested KSP assistance in a vehicle pursuit initiated by one of their deputies. The suspect eventually led officers onto US 27 South. Trooper Paul Blanton was dispatched to Northern Garrard County to assist the Jessamine County Sheriff's Department. The pursuit entered Garrard County, and at this point Trooper Blanton was able to deploy his tire deflation device across the roadway in an attempt to disable the suspect's vehicle. The suspect's vehicle struck the device but was not immediately disabled. The suspect continued to flee on southbound US 27 with Officer Jim Parrett of the Wilmore Police Department immediately behind the suspect. The pursuit continued for several miles when the suspect suddenly rammed the rear of Officer Parrett's vehicle. The suspect's vehicle became disabled. He then opened fire on the officers. The officers exited their vehicles, took cover and returned fire at the suspect. The suspect was fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Deputy Amon was grazed in the hand by one of the suspect's bullets, which penetrated the windshield of his vehicle. The bullet then struck his shoulder. It was stopped by his protective vest. Deputy Amon was transported to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, where he was treated and released. Trooper Blanton suffered a minor injury to his knee. Officer Parrett was not injured. The police vehicles of all three officers were struck by bullets in the exchange of gunfire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Garrard County Coroner Dayrl Hodge. The name of the suspect will be released upon positive identification by proper authorities. The body of the deceased was removed from the scene by the Coroner and taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort, where an autopsy will be conducted. Trooper Blanton has been placed on leave pending the investigation, in accordance with Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures. The investigation is ongoing.
