Fatal Collision on I-71 in Henry County

(Campbellsburg, KY) - On Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at approximately 2:00 p.m. the Kentucky State Police responded to a two vehicle fatal collision at mile marker 35 south bound on Interstate 71 in Henry County.

A passenger vehicle being driven by Wilburn R. Owen of Findlay, Ohio was traveling northbound on I-71 when the driver lost control following a right rear tire failure. The vehicle left the roadway to the left and entered the grass median and emerged into the southbound lanes of I-71 where it was struck on the driver's side by a commercial tractor-trailer being operated by Marvin S. Dunavent from Shelbyville, Tennessee. Both vehicles subsequently struck the guardrail and came to final rest facing south. Wilburn R. Owen was pronounced dead at the scene by the Henry County Coroner, and was reportedly not wearing his seatbelt. The two passengers in the vehicle being operated by Wilburn were transported to the University of Louisville Hospital from resulting injuries and were also reportedly not wearing their seatbelts. Passenger John W. Owen from Findlay, Ohio was transported by the Henry County EMS and passenger Dorothy Owen from Findlay, Ohio was transported by Statcare. The condition of the two passengers is unknown at this time.

Dunavent reportedly received no injuries from the collision and was wearing his seatbelt.

The collision is currently under investigation by Trooper Rick Ellis and Sergeant Jamie Heller with the Kentucky State Police. Assisting at the scene was Trooper Derris Hedger, Trooper Larry Newton, and Trooper Evan Harrod with the Kentucky State Police, the Campbellsburg Fire Department, Henry County EMS, Henry County Emergency Management, Statcare, and the Henry County Coroner.
