Injury Collision on US 231 in Warren County
Date of News Release: 08/14/2008
(Bowling Green) - Larry Cheers was traveling south on U.S. 231 in the right lane. Mr. Cheers states that he was attempting to make a U-turn and return north into Bowling Green. Mr. Cheers begins to make a U-turn in the right southbound lane at the intersection of Greta Drive. Mr. Cheers pulls across the southbound lanes toward the northbound lanes and fails to see Paul Watkins in the left lane behind him traveling south. Mr. Watkins attempts to steer to the right in an attempt to avoid Mr. Cheers. Mr. Watkins' vehicle impacts the right rear corner of the trailer of Mr. Cheers' vehicle. The impact causes severe crush damage to the front of Mr. Watkins' vehicle including the passenger compartment. Mr. Watkins was trapped due to the crush damage and Alvaton VFD along with BGFD worked for over an hour freeing Mr. Watkins from his vehicle. After being extricated, Mr. Watkins was flown to Vanderbilt University Hospital with multiple injuries. Detours were set up diverting traffic around the crash scene for approximately 2 ½ hours.
