Drug Arrest in Hopkins County
Date of News Release: 09/09/2008
(Hopkins County) - Trooper Derek Smith and Trooper Bob Winters were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint at the intersection of KY 336 & KY 481. A vehicle operated by James D. Gilbert proceeded to the checkpoint. Upon speaking with Mr. Gilbert, Trooper Smith detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from him. Troopers obtained consent to search the vehicle from Mr. Gilbert. While patting down Mr. Gilbert, troopers located 3 rocks of crack cocaine inside a cigarette pack that Mr. Gilbert had in his jeans. Troopers also located crack cocaine that the passenger in the vehicle, Anthony W. Qualls, had tried to discard. James D. Gilbert was arrested for 1) DUI 1st Offense & 2) Trafficking Controlled Substance 1st Degree 2nd or > Offense (Cocaine). Anthony W. Qualls was arrested for 1) Public Intoxication, 2) Possession Controlled Substance 1st Degree 2nd or > Offense(Cocaine) & 3) Tampering With Physical Evidence. Both were lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center.
