Fatal Crash and Arrest on Niles Road in Hopkins County

Madisonville, KY - On July 3, 2008, KSP Post 2 received a complaint of an accident on Niles Road, in the Dawson Springs area. Upon arrivial at the scene, Trooper Carlo Anderson, Unit 375, discovered that a 1987 Honda ATV had collided with a 1997 Chevy S-10 pickup truck. The operator of the ATV, Chad Blanton, was pronounced dead by Hopkins County Deputy Coroner Jimmy Matthews. The operator of the Chevy S-10 pickup had fled the scene in another vehicle. It was later determined that the operator of the pickup was Charles Hayes, of Dawson Springs. A short time later, Trooper Derek Smith, Unit 862 and Trooper Ben Sawyer, Unit 1043, located Mr. Hayes at his brother's residence on Jennings Road. Charles Hayes was arrested and charged with Murder, Operating Motor Vehicle Under the Influence/Drugs/Etc 2nd Offense, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Resisting Arrest. Nicky Hayes was also arrested and charged with Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution 1st Degree. Both subjects were lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center. The accident is still under investigation by Accident Reconstructionist Trooper Cory King, Unit 851 and Trooper Carlo Anderson, Unit 375. The criminal charges are still under investigation by Trooper Derek Smith, Unit 862.
