Death Investigation in Dawson Springs, KY

Dawson Springs, KY (Hopkins County) - On Thursday, January 24, 2008 at approximately 12:23 p.m., the Kentucky State Police Post 2 Madisonville received a call from the Dawson Springs Police Department in reference to a death investigation. The location of the complaint was 314 East Keigan Street in the limits of Dawson Springs.

The Dawson Springs Police Department and Medical Center Ambulance Service had arrived at the above location at approximately 12:10 p.m. Upon their arrival, they located the victim deceased. The victim has been identified as Darrin W. Matheny age 41 of Dawson Springs, KY. Hopkins County Deputy Coroner, Jimmy Mathews, pronounced Mr. Matheny dead at the scene. At the present time, it appears that the victim died as a result of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be performed at a later date.

The Dawson Springs Police Department, Medical Center Ambulance Service and the Hopkins County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene.

Dawson Springs, KY (Hopkins County) - On January 20, 2008 at approximately 5:02 p.m., KSP Detective Lonnie Kavanaugh arrested Darrin W. Matheny age 41 of Dawson Springs, KY at the Dawson Springs Police Department. Mr. Matheny was charged with Assault 1st Degree and Unlawful Imprisonment 1st Degree. He was lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation concerning Mr. Matheny's involvement with a female victim. Mr. Matheny is accused of causing serious physical injury to the victim and restraining the victim which exposed her to a risk of serious physical injury. The investigation is continuing by Detective Lonnie Kavanaugh.
