KSP Celebrates Successful Friday Night Blue Lights Campaign
Date of News Release: 12/08/2008
(Mayfield, KY) - Friday Night Blue Lights is a football-themed fall enforcement campaign developed by Kentucky State Police that targets seat belt violations, speeding and impaired driving with an added emphasis on underage drinking.
CRASH© data shows that Kentucky has the highest number of highway injuries and fatalities during the months of September and October - specifically, during the evening hours on Fridays. For this reason, KSP created the Friday Night Blue Lights Program.
This campaign involved safety checkpoints, saturation patrols in and around football venues, high school assemblies and half-time presentations.
All posts participated in the program. Commissioner Rodney Brewer challenged post commanders to have a proactive approach when enforcing speed, DUI and occupant protection violations on Friday nights. The campaign began on Friday, August 28th and ended Friday, October 31st. The following are the cumulative totals for all post's enforcement activity.
- 196 DUI Arrests
- 583 Seat Belt Citations
- 49 Child Restraint violations
- 1,698 Speeding violations
- 75 Drug Arrests
- 180 Fugitive Arrests
- 53 Educational Programs in schools
- 5,844 total contacts
On Thursday, December 4th, Kentucky State Police, Mayfield Post, received special recognition for conducting the most successful enforcement campaign amongst all 16 posts. The recognition was given at the Governor's Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards Ceremony in Lexington, Kentucky.
