Hands Across the Border Traffic Safety Check Point
Date of News Release: 05/31/2008
(Fulton, KY) - On Friday evening the Kentucky State Police partnered with Tennessee law enforcement to take part in a "Hands Across the Border" traffic safety checkpoint. This year, troopers with the Kentucky State Police staged a safety checkpoint at the intersection of KY 166 and KY 239 near the state line in Fulton County. Tennessee authorities staged a similar checkpoint further down the highway near Union City Tennessee. The goal of this collaborated effort was to crack down on impaired drivers which often travel between the two states on these roadways. During this detail, KSP inspected nearly 60 vehicles issuing a total of 10 citations for various offenses. There were no DUI arrests, however one individual was arrested for operating on a suspended/revoked license. Post One spokesman, Trooper Dean Patterson states, "This is an opportunity for us to be proactive in rural areas by allowing the public know that we are present in their communities and are committed to highway safety."
As always, the public can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers by calling Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers should remember to get a good description of the vehicle and a license plate if possible. All callers can remain anonymous.
