Scam Alert

Date of News Release: 03/11/2008

(Hickory, KY) - Kentucky State Police want to warn the public of possible scams hitting the area during the month of March. A group commonly known as the "Irish Travelers" or "gypsies" traditionally comes through our area using various scams in an attempt to gain entry into your home. In the past, they have traveled in groups of three or more canvassing neighborhoods looking for unsuspecting victims, who are normally the elderly and/or widowers. They will approach their victim with an offer to paint your home, seal your driveway, sell and install gutters, or they may be attempting to sell linoleum or carpet. Once inside your home, one person will divert your attention while the others will come in and take your property. They may also take payment for a job and then never complete the work.

Kentucky State Police requests that the public exercise caution when opening doors to unfamiliar persons, and never let a stranger in your home, especially if you are alone. If you suspect these people have been to your home or you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please contact Kentucky State Police at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state) or contact local law enforcement.
