(Columbia, KY) - (December 4th) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and its partners honored 183 Kentucky law enforcement officers from 161 agencies across the commonwealth for their efforts in targeting impaired drivers.

The 2008 Governor's Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards ceremony was held at the Embassy Suites hotel in Lexington. It was hosted by the cabinet's Office of Highway Safety along with the Federal Highway Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Impaired driving is one of America's deadliest crimes," said Transportation Secretary Joe Prather, who is Gov. Steve Beshear's representative for highway safety. "These officers, their departments and agencies render a great service for public safety by targeting impaired drivers."

Across the country, more than 13,000 people are killed each year in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher.

In Kentucky, alcohol-related crashes resulted in 214 deaths and more than 3,400 injuries in 2007.

Tpr. Daniel Stephens received the award from Post 15 with 41 impaired driving arrests.
