Airplane Crash in Washington County

Date of News Release: 06/18/08

(Columbia, KY) - At approximately 1213 hours CST, Post 15 Columbia received a call in reference to a possible airplane crash in Washington County, KY. Emergency crews were notified. When units arrived on the scene, they discovered a plane fully engulfed in flames. Through investigation, it was learned that the Louisville FAA had received a distress call from the plane indicating it was experiencing engine trouble. The plane is believed to have attempted an emergency landing at the Lebanon-Springfield airport in Washington County. Upon touching down on the runway, the plane burst into flames, killing the pilot who was the only occupant. The pilot was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Washington County Coroner. An autopsy is scheduled next date by the Medical Examiner's office to confirm the identity of the subject. The incident is under investigation by the FAA & NTSB.
