KSP Prepare for Major Safety Check Points in Targeted Areas
With Emphasis on Driving Under the Influence of Drugs

(London, KY) - WHAT: Operation Egg Hunt (Easter Weekend)
WHEN: Saturday, March 22, 2008* (2200 - 2400 hours)
WHERE: Pike, Laurel and Muhlenberg Counties
WHO: KSP Team 1 = Post 9, KSP Team 2 = Post 11, KSP Team 3 = Post 2 & 16
(Canines & DRE Specialists will be at each safety check location)
WHY: Impact targeted regions with increased efforts in the area of DUID.

KSP will hold a News Conference at HQ on Monday, March 24th (1400 hours) to release statistical information from the checkpoints.

ADDITIONAL STATISTICAL INFORMATION:

• KSP received grant funds from the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) to target specific areas where prescription drug abuse is prevalent.
• The increase in prescription and party drug abuse is carrying over onto Kentucky roadways in the form of drugged driving.
• Drugged Driving: Driving when a drug renders the driver incapable of driving safely or causes the driver to be impaired.
• Approximately 355,000 people used prescription drugs for non-medicinal purposes last year in Kentucky. (source: NIDA)
• In 2006, over 20 percent of collisions that resulted from persons with DUI also tested positive for drugs.
• In 2006, AOC reported 25,573 charges (OP MV Under the Influence of ALC/Drugs). Twenty-five percent of those cases were drug cases.
• In 2006, KSP Crime Lab tested 7,532 DUI cases for drugs. Sixty-three percent (4,745) of those tested positive for controlled substances.
• Fifteen other states currently have DUID legislation. (AZ, GA, IL, IN, IA, MI, MN, NV, NC, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, WS)
• Kentucky ranks #1 in the nation for most narcotics per capita. (source: DEA)
• In a single month (in 2006) 27 DUI cases in Martin District Court involved drugs not alcohol.
• One in five teens has abused a prescription pain medicine. (source Ky. ODCP)
• Kentucky leads the nation in using prescription drugs for non-medicinal purposes last year.
