Fatal Collision on US 119 in Harlan County

(Keith, KY) - On 8/08/2008 at 7:04 a.m. Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received a call about a fatal crash on US 119 in the community of Keith in Harlan County. Unit 1 was a 1999 Ford Explorer operated by Amanda Rice, age 30 of Baxter, KY and was not wearing a seatbelt. Unit 2 was a 1996 Chevrolet pickup operated by Jason Hill, age 30 of Rogersville, TN and was wearing a seatbelt. Unit 3 was a 1994 Peterbilt tractor trailer operated by Mason Wagers Jr., age 55 of Flat Lick, KY and was wearing a seatbelt. Unit 1 was traveling northbound on US 119. Unit 2 was northbound US 119 attempting to turn left. Unit 3 was traveling south on US 119. Unit 1 made contact with Unit 2 and lost control crossing the centerline into the southbound lane of US 119 and struck Unit 3 head-on. The operator of Unit 1 sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. As per Kentucky Revised Statute, all operators of motor vehicles involved in a fatal crash are taken for toxicology test. Results are pending from the KSP lab in Frankfort, KY. Assisting at the scene were Harlan PD, Harlan SO, Harlan Rescue Squad, Harlan County Coroners Office, KVE Officer Bert Foster, Trooper Jimmy Halcomb, Captain John Bradley and TFC Walt Meachum. This fatal crash is still under investigation and is being reconstructed by Lt. PJ Burnett and the case officer is Trooper Rob Farley of Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan.
