Update on Trooper Involved Shooting in Johnson County

(Pikeville, KY) - On Wednesday, December 12, 2007 Randy Baldwin age 46 of Oil Springs passed away at the Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.

An autopsy is pending.

(Pikeville, KY) - On Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Kentucky State Police Post in Pikeville received a call of a suspicious person at the intersection of Highway 40 and 580 in the Oil Springs Community of Johnson County.

Upon Trooper Byron Hansfords arrival, the suspect later identified as Randy Baldwin age 46 of Oil Springs Kentucky, was found beside the guardrail and appeared to be intoxicated. A subsequent altercation ensued and the suspect brandished a weapon, which led to Trooper Hansford firing his duty weapon at the suspect.

The suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was airlifted to Cabell Huntington Medical Center for treatment.

Trooper Byron Hansford, age 46, is a 17-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police and assigned to the Pikeville Post. Pursuant to Kentucky State Police Policy Tpr. Hansford will be placed on administrative leave pending investigation. The investigation is continuing.
