Trooper Involved Shooting in Magoffin County

(Pikeville, Ky.) - On Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 3:59 pm EST, Post 9-Pikeville, received a call for assistance from the Salyersville Police Department regarding an intoxicated male subject at the Johnson Trailer Park at Mash Fork in the Salyersville community of Magoffin County.

KSP Trooper Brad Austin arrived at the scene at approximately 4:18 pm and met Salyersville Police Officers Matthew Watson and Andy Ybarro. The alleged perpetrator, Stewart Grant Lenz approached officers armed with a rifle. After numerous commands to place the weapon down, shots were exchanged by Lenz, Trooper Austin and Officer Watson. Lenz sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to the Paul B Hall Medical Center and later flown to the UK Medical Center.

Trooper Austin, Officer Matthew Watson and Andy Ybarro were not injured during the incident.

Pursuant to Kentucky State Police policy, Trooper Austin will be placed on administrative leave with pay while the shooting is investigated. Trooper Austin is a 2 year veteran of KSP.

The investigation is ongoing.
