Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian in Belton, KY

Belton, KY (Muhlenberg County) - Scott K. Lear age 18 of Belton, KY was operating a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer westbound on KY 2270 East. As Mr. Lear topped a hillcrest in the road, he noticed Ruby J. Wells (female, age 55 of Drakesboro, KY) removing an animal from the roadway. Mr. Lear was unable to avoid Ms. Wells and his vehicle struck her. After the impact, Ms. Wells remained in the roadway. Randall T. Gates age 24 of Belton, KY was operating a 1992 Ford F-150 pickup truck and was traveling behind Mr. Lear. Mr. Gates noticed the brake lights on Mr. Lear's vehicle and to avoid striking Mr. Lear's vehicle, Mr. Gates crossed into the eastbound lane. Mr. Gates continued to travel westbound in the eastbound lane and did not see that Mr. Lear's vehicle had struck Ms. Wells. Mr. Gates vehicle also struck Ms. Wells. The Muhlenberg County Coroner pronounced Ruby J. Wells dead at the scene. Neither Mr. Lear nor Mr. Gates were injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. The crash that occurred on December 3, 2007 at 5:14 p.m. remains under investigation by Tpr. Jeff McWhorter. Sgt. Duane Snyder, Tpr. Jerry Knight, the Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department, Muhlenberg County EMS, Beechmont Volunteer Fire Department and the Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene.
