Felony Drug Arrest At Traffic Safety Checkpoint in Hopkins County

Dawson Springs, KY (Hopkins County) - On Friday, May 25, 2007 at approximately 1:09 a.m., Tpr. Derek Smith and other officers were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint at KY 109 and Dunns Cem just north of Dawson Springs. A 1996 Mazda Millenia operated by Harold Franklin age 28 of St. Charles, KY proceeded to the checkpoint. Officers obtained consent to search the vehicle from Mr. Franklin. Upon searching the vehicle, Tpr. Smith located suspected marijuana, meth, pills and drug paraphernalia. Mr. Franklin and his passenger, Thomas Hickerson age 24 of Madisonville, KY, were arrested without incident and charged with the following offenses:
- Trafficking Controlled Substance 1st Degree 1st Offense-Meth
- Trafficking Controlled Substance 2nd Degree 1st Offense
- Trafficking Marijuana less than 8 ounces 1st Offense
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 1st Offense
- DUI 1st Offense
- Public Intoxication
Both subjects were lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center. Tpr. Dan Morck and Dawson Springs Police Department Officer Lonnie Rogers assisted at the scene.
