Injury Accident Involving State Police Vehicle

Date of News Release: 04/15/2007

(Hopkins County) - Trooper Smith was traveling eastbound on US 62, responding to a domestic complaint in the Nortonville area. As he approached the intersection of US 62 and North Main Street, Mrs. Martha Lovan's vehicle entered into his pathway. Trooper Smith attempted to avoid her by changing into the westbound lane, which was clear of oncoming traffic. When he got into the oncoming lane, Mrs. Lovan attempted to make a left turn onto Mockingbird Lane. Trooper Smith applied his brakes to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful and struck Mrs. Lovan's vehicle in the driver's side with the front passenger's side of his cruiser. Mrs. Lovan's vehicle started a counter clockwise rotation until it went into a ditch and came to a final rest on the passenger's side. Trooper Smith stopped his vehicle on Mockingbird Lane and exited his vehicle to administer aid to Mrs. Lovan. Trooper Smith did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision. Mrs. Lovan was transported to Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
