Fatal Crash on I-24 in Christian County

(Christian County) - Jacob Richter was traveling westbound on I-24 at a high rate of speed and for an unknown reason entered into the Welcome Center rest area. His vehicle traveled completely through the parking area until it left the roadway on the west-end of the lot. It then entered the on-ramp to the westbound lanes of I-24. At the same time, Jeffery Trusty was beginning to travel down the ramp to enter the interstate. The vehicles collided in a sideswipe manner causing Mr. Richter´s vehicle to spin around and then over turn. Mr. Trusty did not receive any injuries as a result of the collision, and Mr. Richter was flown to Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN, for serious injuries that he sustained. Joseph Salas, a passenger in Mr. Richter´s vehicle sustained major injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Christian County Coroner. The collision is still under investigation by Trooper Ben Sawyer.

The westbound lanes of I-24 were shut down for approximately one hour and the Welcome Center was closed for approximately six hours while the accident scene was investigated.
