Injury Crash on I-24 in Lyon County

Date of News Release: 12/14/2007

(Lyon County) - On December 14, 2007, at approximately 07:00AM, a vehicle operated by Dustin Taylor of Eddyville rear-ended a parked semi tractor and trailer. The crash took place approximately 1/2 mile east of Exit 40, I-24 westbound. As a result of the crash and investigation, one lane of the interstate was shut down for 2 hours. Immediately prior to the crash, Taylor stated he experienced trouble steering, and his vehicle was pulling to the right. Before he could stop, the right front strut and wheel assembly failed and detached from the vehicle, causing it to run off the roadway and onto the shoulder. Ronald Mercer had stopped along the emergency shoulder to check the semi load when Taylor struck the rear of the trailer. The impact caused severe damage to the Taylor vehicle. It came to final rest blocking the left lane of the interstate. Taylor, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injury but air bag deployment likely reduced additional injury. The Lyon County Sheriffs Department, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, and the Department of Highways SAFE truck assisted on-scene.
