Shots Fired Investigation and Arrest in Lovelaceville, KY

Date of News Release: 12/09/2007

(Lovelaceville, KY) - At approximately 2:40 am on December 8, 2007 Post 1 received a 911 call from a female reporting that Robert J. Moreland was intoxicated and that he had fired several shots in the caller's direction with an assault rifle as she and her male acquaintance were leaving Moreland's residence.

Mr. Moreland had five children in his house when the incident occurred. He also apparently fired a shotgun towards them. The Ballard County Sheriff's Department responded and requested assistance from the Kentucky State Police and the McCracken County Sheriff's Department. Upon law enforcement's arrival to the residence, Mr. Moreland refused to come out. He came to the door with a weapon and then went back inside his residence where he barricaded himself. During the incident he did allow the children to leave the house. Mr. Moreland was contacted by telephone in an attempt to negotiate his surrender. At 4:49 am Mr. Moreland surrendered to law enforcement without incident and was taken into custody. He was charged with seven counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st degree, a class D felony, and lodged in the Ballard County Detention Center.
