Three People Arrested After Pursuit Near Mayfield, KY

Date of News Release: 11/06/2007

(Mayfield, KY) - On November 5, 2007 at 1:20PM, Trooper Thomas Clifton observed a green Pontiac Grand Am fail to stop at a stop sign on Keybottom Road at the intersection of KY. 121 North of Mayfield. Trooper Clifton followed the car West on New Hope Road and when he attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle sped off, failing to stop. The pursuit continued onto Jimtown Road, Butterworth Road, Oak Grove Church Road, and then North Sutton Road before turning West on KY. 80 and left on Beck Lane. Once on Beck Lane, the vehicle traveled through a field on Lakeshore Drive and numerous yards in the neighborhood before exiting the vehicle at a residence on Sayre Road. When the driver exited the vehicle, he failed to put the vehicle in park and it rolled forward and in to a pond where it became submerged.

The driver, Jason S. Garber 31 of Mayfield, was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. As Trooper Clifton was taking Garber back to his cruiser, Garber's mother, Brenda Hawkins 52 of Mayfield, attempted to interfere and became belligerent. She was arrested for Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, and Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree. At one point during the pursuit, Garber's sister, Melissa Garber 28 of Mayfield, attempted to intervene by stepping in front of Clifton's cruiser so he couldn't get pass. She was arrested for Failure to Yield Right of Way to an Emergency Vehicle. Jason Garber was charged with Fleeing or Evading 1st Degree, DUI 1s Offense, Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 2nd, Resisting Arrest, Speeding, and Disregarding a Stop Sign. All three were lodged in the Graves County Detention Center.

The Graves County Sheriff's Department and Mayfield Police Department assisted state police at the scene. The investigation is continuing by Trooper Clifton.
