"Cops In Shops" Arrest in Boaz, KY
Date of News Release: 05/20/2007
(Boaz, KY) On Saturday, May 19th, Kentucky State Police (KSP) and the Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) were conducting a "Cops In Shops" detail at the Smoke Shop located at US Highway 45 and KY Highway 1241 in Leeder Bottoms.
At approximately 1930 hours, Rodney M. Townsend, 50, of Mayfield entered the liquor store. Mr. Townsend, who was loud and intoxicated, approached under cover Trooper Dean Patterson and told the trooper to get him 2 cases of beer. Mr. Townsend made his purchases and exited the store. Trooper Patterson followed Mr. Townsend out of the store and identified himself as a State Trooper before Townsend could get into a vehicle. Mr. Townsend began to argue with the trooper who subsequently told Mr. Townsend he was under arrest for Alcohol Intoxication in a Public Place. Mr. Townsend attempted to assault Trooper Patterson by taking a swing at him and refusing to obey Trooper Patterson's verbal commands, forcing Trooper Patterson to use physical force to affect the arrest.
Mr. Townsend was charged with Alcohol Intoxication in a Public Place, Resisting Arrest, Assault 3rd on a Police Officer, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 1st Offense. He was lodged in the McCracken County Detention Center. Townsend was injured, but refused medical treatment. He was given first aid at the scene by other KSP troopers. Trooper Patterson was treated and released from the Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield, for a minor injury.
