Fatal Crash I-24 in Lyon County

Date of News Release: 03/31/2007

(MAYFIELD, KY.) - John T. Saxton of Murfreesboro, TN, was westbound on I-24 at approximately 04:30 this morning (3/31/07) when he lost control of his vehicle in a curve. Examination of the crash scene, and information from several witnesses, indicates Mr. Saxton was traveling at a very high rate of speed when his 2002 Pontiac Grand Am ran off the right shoulder of the interstate. Mr. Saxton attempted to regain control of the vehicle, but he lost control as the vehicle began to rotate counter-clockwise. The vehicle then struck a guard rail end, overturning, coming to final rest embedded in the guard rail. Saxton was pronounced dead at the scene by Lyon County Coroner Ronnie Patton, and was subsequently extricated by the Lyon County Rescue Squad and the Eddyville Fire Department. One lane of I-24 was closed for about four hours as the vehicle was removed from the guard rail. Saxton was not wearing a seat belt. The collision remains under investigation by reconstructionist Trooper 1st Class C. G. Anderson.
