Kentucky State Police Traffic Enforcement Plan

Date of News Release: 02/28/2007

(Henderson, KY) - In 2006, Post 16 Henderson initiated a traffic enforcement campaign using data from the CRASH database to identify the top 17 injury crash roads in the Post 16 area of Henderson, Daviess, Union, McLean, Ohio and Hancock Counties. Sixteen roadways were divided among three squads of Troopers that covered their assigned areas and the crash section were the highest number of injury crashes were occurring. Of these roadways, US 41 North was a major targeted area.

The injury crash rate on these highways for the past three years were as follows: 165 injury crashes in 2003, resulting in 6 fatalities, 157 injury crashes in 2004 resulting in 10 fatalities and 143 injury crashes in 2005 resulting in 7 fatalities. Last year's effort resulted in the injury crash rate on these 17 highways being lowered to 132 injury crashes with 3 fatalities.

The 2006 enforcement effort on U.S. 41 North was preceded with the location of a stationary radar display to remind divers of their speed. Information was then released to the local media that heavy enforcement efforts was being planned for this section of roadway. Enforcement efforts were conducted frequently thereafter with the focus on the time periods for which we had received the most speeding complaints. Because of the high number of observed violation, six to eight Troopers were assigned to conduct enforcement on U.S. 41 North. This particular location received the most enforcement effort, as a result, no fatalities occurred on this section of U.S. 41 for the first time since 2002.

Even with the Henderson County crash that claimed 6 lives in one crash last April, the overall fatalities for the Post 16 area has decreased.

Please report dangerous driver's to the Kentucky State Police at: 1-270-826-3312 or 1-270-685-3927.
