Fatal Crash on KY 55 Claims Four Lives in Washington County

(Columbia, KY) - The Kentucky State Police at the Columbia Post are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred in Washington County today, killing a mother and her three children.

Trooper Toby Young, a Kentucky State Police accident reconstructionist is investigating the accident that occurred approximately two miles south of Springfield on KY 55 around 8:00AM today. Melanie A. Wise, age 31, of Bardstown, KY was travelling south on KY 55 when she crossed into the path of James E. Browning, age 62, of Lebanon, KY. Ms. Wise was operating a 2003 Buick Rendezvous and Mr. Browning was operating a 1991 Mack semi tractor-trailer hauling road construction equipment. Ms. Wise along with her three children ages 7, 6 & 1 were fatally injured in the collision. Mr. Browning was transported to the Springview Hospital in Lebanon, where he was treated and released. All of the occupants in both vehicles had their seatbelts on.

Trooper Young was assisted at the scene by Trooper John Adams, Sgt. Knifley, Trooper Slinker, Trooper Underwood, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Washington County Coroner, Washington County Fire and Rescue agencies.
