Fatal Crash Involving a Pedestrian on I-64 in Carter County

Date of News Release: 03/28/07

(Ashland, KY) - Kentucky State Police in Ashland are continuing their investigation into a fatality collision that occurred early this morning on I-64 just east of Olive Hill, Ky.

Ervin Faines had been operating his 2007 Freightliner travelling eastbound on I-64 when apparently the vehicle stalled partially in the roadway. Faines exited his vehicle and began to place emergency road markers to the rear of his vehicle, which was partially on the shoulder of the road and in the slow lane of travel. The driver of unit 2, a 1990 Honda Accord, was travelling eastbound and apparently did not observe the stalled tractor and trailer or Faines, which was at the rear of his vehicle. Unit 2 vehicle struck Faines as he was behind the trailer of his vehicle.

The roadway had to be shut down for approximately three and one-half hours for an accident reconstructionist to process the scene. Carter County Coroner pronounced Faines dead at the scene.

Both occupants of unit 2 were transported to Kings Daughter's Medical Center where they were treated and released.
