Trooper Involved Shooting

(Pikeville, Ky.) - On Friday, May 26, 2006 at 5:47 pm EST, Post 9-Pikeville, received a call for assistance regarding an unknown male making threats with a handgun at the Beverly Ann Coal Tipple on KY 404 in the David community of Floyd County. It was reported that the unknown male was brandishing a handgun and making threats to kill everyone at the Coal Tipple.

KSP Trooper Chris Hicks and KVE Officer Tommy Gearheart arrived at the scene at approximately 6:04 pm and advised they were in pursuit of the suspect's vehicle. A few minutes later, the suspect Jeff Jones lost control of his Dodge van and went over an embankment. Jones fired a shot when Trooper Hicks and Officer Gearheart approached the suspect vehicle,. Trooper Hicks then made numerous attempts to talk Jones into dropping his weapon and surrendering. Jones continued to walk away from Hicks going toward citizens that were in the area. The suspect pointed his weapon at the Officers and the civilians. Trooper Hicks then fired upon Jones. Jeff Jones, 44 years of age, was pronounced dead at the Highlands Regional Medical Center by the Floyd County Coroner at 8:21 pm. Neither officer was injured during the incident.

Pursuant to Kentucky State Police policy, Trooper Hicks will be placed on administrative duty while the shooting is investigated. Trooper Hicks is a 3 year veteran of KSP.
