Update to Fatal Crash in Gallatin County Closes I-71

Campbellsburg, KY - A passenger car driven by David Longstreth Jr. from Dayton, OH was traveling south on I-71 through a construction zone with a tapering merge lane. Mr. Longstreths vehicle struck a construction barrel and then swerved into a southbound tractor-trailer driven by Joseph Elmore form Mt. Vernon, TX. Mr. Longstreths vehicle then overturned. Mr. Longstreth was transported by Gallatin County Life Squad to St. Lukes Hospital West where he was pronounced dead by the Boone County Coroner. His passenger Peggy Longstreth was transported by LifeNet to the University of Cincinnati Hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Mr. Elmore received no injuries. All three people were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
I-71 southbound was closed for approximately 3 hours.
Trooper Nelson Dales is the lead investigator and was assisted by the Gallatin County Sheriff, Gallatin County Fire and Rescue.
Campbellsburg, Kentucky - On May 30, 2006 at 9:12am Troopers from the Campbellsburg Post responded to a crash at the 59 mile marker northbound on I-71. According to information from Trooper Dales (KSP Accident Reconstructionist) a car was attempting to pass a tractor-trailer in a construction zone and the car clipped the bumper of the tractor-trailer causing the operator of the car to lose control. 2 people have been flown to area hospitals by air ambulances. 1 person did receive fatal injuries. The next of kin has not been notified at this time. Names of those involved will be released after notification has been made. This investigation is on going and more information will be released as it becomes available.
