Bowling Green Police Department Officer Involved Shooting

(Bowling Green, KY) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer involved shooting by the Bowling Green Police Department. Bowling Green Police Department procedure is that all officer-involved shootings be investigated by the Kentucky State Police.
After a preliminary investigation these are the facts we know. On Tuesday morning October 31, 2006 at approximately 10:35 the Bowling Green Police Department received a call from a female requesting that officers respond to 1036 Vine Street for a subject brandishing a knife.
Initially three officers responded to the call for assistance, and encountered Rojelio Gonzalez-Pacheco, armed with two knives. Pacheco attacked Officer David Whitson. During the attack other responding officers used deadly force to protect Officer Whitson. During the altercation both Pacheco and Whitson sustained gunshot wounds. Officer Whitson and Pacheco were transported to the medical center at Bowling Green. Officer Whitson died as a result of his injury at 11:19am. Pacheco was pronounced dead as a result of his injury at 11:35 by the Warren County Coroner's Office.
David Whitson, age 34, was a Master Police Officer and an 8 year veteran of the Bowling Green Police Department. His wife and two children survive him. Rojelio Gonzalez-Pacheco, age 26, and was believed to have been a resident of Edmonton, Kentucky.
Per Bowling Green Police Department policy, Officer Beldon Perry and Officer Erik Woodward have been placed on routine administrative leave. Autopsies on Master Police Officer David Whitson and Rojelio Gonzalez-Pacheco have been scheduled for Wednesday morning.
All information at this point is very preliminary. The investigation by the Kentucky State Police continues. No further details are being released at this time.
