Theft By Extortion Arrest in Barren County, KY

Date of News Release: 01/13/2006

(BOWLING GREEN, KY) - On January 12, 2006 Caverna Independent School Central Office received a telephone call from an unidentified male subject. Allegedly, the caller claimed to have in his possession a video tape containing material that would be detrimental in nature to representatives of the school system. The caller demanded that the school system pay him $5000.00 in exchange for this videotape. The subject stated that if school officials refused to meet his demands that he would release the videotape to the news media. Caverna School Administrators reported the incident to the Kentucky State Police.

The Kentucky State Police immediately began an investigation with cooperation from the Caverna School Administration. The Kentucky state police conducted an undercover operation on Friday January 13, 2006. A controlled exchange was conducted at a local Cave City business between the suspect and Caverna's School Superintendent. The suspect was taken into custody by officials after he had taken possession of a decoy envelope, which he believed to contain the money.

Detectives reviewed the videotape and found it to contain nothing related to the Caverna Independent School system or any of it's employees.

Calvin Sublett of Glasgow, KY was charged with Theft By Extortion Over $300.00 and is currently lodged in the Barren County Correctional Facility. The case remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
