Triple Fatality on KY 109 in Hopkins County

Hopkins County - Leonard E. Grubbs was operating a 1994 Western Star log truck northbound on KY 109. The truck was empty. Mr. Grubbs was making a left turn from KY 109 onto KY 2273 (Furgersontown Road). Amie D. Roberts was operating a 1996 Ford Taurus GL northbound on KY 109. As Ms. Roberts' vehicle topped a hillcrest, the log truck was making the left turn. Ms. Roberts was unable to stop her vehicle in time and struck the rear of the log truck. The log truck spun around and came to rest on KY 2273 facing southbound. Ms. Roberts' vehicle continued to travel northbound and exited off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled into a ditch where it struck brush and small trees. Hopkins County Deputy Coroner, Dennis Mayfield, pronounced Amie Roberts, her son (Michael Rich) and one of her daughters (Laurel M. Roberts) dead at the scene. Another daughter (Lillian B. Buzzard) of Ms. Roberts was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center for treatment. Amie Roberts and Michael Rich were not wearing seatbelts. Laurel Roberts and Lillian Buzzard were wearing seatbelts. Mr. Grubbs was transported by ambulance to the Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. Mr. Grubbs was wearing a seatbelt. The crash remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
