Injury Crash on the Western Kentucky Parkway in Hopkins County

Date of News Release: 07/04/2006

Hopkins County - Rodney O. Jones age 37 of Dexter, KY was operating a 2001 Ford Ranger eastbound on the Western Kentucky Parkway at approximately the 31 mile-marker. Brandon L. Severance age 27 of Owensboro, KY was operating a 2003 International tractor-trailer eastbound on the Western Kentucky Parkway traveling behind Jones' vehicle. The tractor-trailer was hauling canned foods. Rain started to downpour and Mr. Jones slowed due to the heavy downpour and water pooling on the roadway. Mr. Severance attempted to slow; however, his trailer began to slide on the wet roadway causing him to loose control. The tractor-trailer rear-ended the pickup truck. The tractor-trailer then slid partially off the roadway into a ditch where the fuel tanks were ruptured. The trailer was blocking the slow lane (right lane) of the eastbound side. A passenger in the tractor-trailer, Brian Huckleberry age unknown of Owensboro, KY, was transported by ambulance to the Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. Both Mr. Jones and Mr. Severance were wearing seatbelts. Mr. Huckleberry was not wearing a seatbelt. The roadway is open, but crews remain at the scene cleaning up the fuel. Tpr. Lonnie Kavanaugh investigated the crash that occurred on July 4, 2006 at 11:50 a.m. The Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, Dawson Springs Rescue, Medical Center Ambulance Service, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Hopkins County Emergency Management and EPA assisted at the scene.
