Shooting and Death Investigation Near Eddyville, KY

(Eddyville, KY) - Post 1 received a 911 call of a shooting on KY 293 approximately 6-miles south of Eddyville at 10:36 pm on Sunday, November 5th. The investigation revealed that the victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven on interstate 24 when he confessed to his driver that he had shot his estranged girlfriend in Nashville, Tennessee earlier that date, and that he was going to take his own life. The victim produced a .38 caliber handgun and was shot while in the vehicle. The victim's driver was not injured.
The victim's driver exited interstate 24 and proceeded to three different houses off KY. 293, until she was able to raise someone to call 911 for assistance.
Lyon County Coroner, Ronnie Patton, pronounced the victim dead at the scene. It appears the victim died as a result of a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. An autopsy is being performed this afternoon at the Medical Examiners Office in Madisonville, KY.
The victim was a suspect in the shooting of his estranged girlfriend and an armed robbery of an unrelated victim in Nashville, Tennessee earlier on Sunday.
The Kentucky State Police were assisted at the scene by the Lyon County Sheriff's Department, Eddyville Police Department, Lyon County EMS, and the Lyon County Coroner.
The investigation is continuing by Kentucky State Police Trooper Richard Wright, Sergeant Brent White, and the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department.
The victim has been identified as Mr. Avil Hassan (25) of Nashville, Tennessee. The victim's estranged girlfriend, whom he shot in Nashville, has been identified as Ms. Ruthmae C. Butler (25). She remains in critical condition at a Nashville, Tennessee Hospital.
