Shooting of a McCracken County Deputy Sheriff Investigation

Date of News Release: 10/11/2006

(WEST PADUCAH, KY.) Kentucky State Police and McCracken County Sheriff's Department Detectives are investigating the shooting of a McCracken County Deputy Sheriff. At approximately 4:50 AM, Deputy Benny Harding was patrolling Metropolis Ferry Landing Road when he encountered a vehicle at the end of the road. Deputy Harding positioned his vehicle behind the suspect vehicle and was exiting his patrol car when a white male approached the deputy and stuck a shotgun in his chest. The deputy reacted by turning to his left, attempting to push the weapon away. The assailant fired one shot, striking Deputy Harding in the right shoulder. The deputy pulled his service weapon and returned fire while seeking cover at the rear of his vehicle. The assailant, described as a white male, 5'6" to 5'8", blondish/brown hair with a goatee in his early 30's, returned to his car and sped away. Deputy Harding was transported to Western Baptist Hospital and is recovering from surgery. Anyone with information can contact state police at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state) or McCracken County Sheriff's Department at 444-4719.
