Fatal Crash on I-24 in Lyon County
Date of News Release: 09/28/2006
(Lyon County, KY) - The Kentucky State Police Post 1 Collision Reconstructionist team is investigating a fatal crash on I-24 that was initially caused by a long-horn steer running loose.
The four-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 11:00 AM near the 46-mile marker in Lyon County. Preliminary investigation has revealed that traffic had stopped in the eastbound lanes of I-24 at the Barkley Lake overpass due to the animal in the roadway. A tractor and semi trailer driven by Remly Shamblin of McDowell, WV, had stopped in the right lane. Karen Boyd of Hopkinsville, KY stopped directly behind Shamblin's semi.. Tyler Alton of Williston, ND had stopped in the left-hand lane along with other several other vehicles. A 40 foot RV, driven by Alfred Martin of Days Creek, OR, was also eastbound but failed to see traffic stopped in the roadway. The Martin RV sideswiped the Alton vehicle and struck the Boyd vehicle in the rear. A third impact occurred when Martin struck the rear of the semi trailer. The RV came to rest against the guardrail and then caught fire.
The occupants of the RV were transported by air to Vanderbilt Hospital with multiple injuries. The Lyon County Coroner pronounced Boyd dead at the scene. The occupants of the tractor-trailer were transported by ambulance to the Caldwell Co. Hospital and treated for minor injuries. The Eastbound lanes of I-24 were closed for 7 hours while the scene was being cleared. The Lyon Co. EMS, Lyon Rescue, Kuttawa Fire, Eddyville Fire, Lyon Co.
