Injury Crash on I-24 on the Marshall/Livingston County Line

Date of News Release: 01/25/2006

(Marshall/Livingston County, KY) - James Harris was traveling Westbound on I-24. He was operating a 2004 Kenworth dump truck owned by Sweeping Corporation of America of Louisville, KY. Mr. Harris was pulling a directional sign trailer and was acting as an escort vehicle for a street cleaner who was in front of him. Joseph Lacewell was operating a 2000 Kenworth tractor and tanker Westbound on I-24. The tanker was empty but had not been cleaned and still had Latex residue inside. The truck and tanker was leased by Quality Carriers of Carbondale, Il.

Mr. Lacewell failed to see the slower moving vehicles and struck the rear of the directional trailer and dump truck. Mr. Lacewell's vehicle immediately burst into flames upon impact. His vehicle came to rest against the left side bridge railing of the I-24 Tennessee River Bridge. Mr. Harris' vehicle came to rest blocking the right lane.

Mr. Lacewell was pulled from his burning truck by witnesses and transported to Western Baptist Hospital for treatment of multiple injuries. Mr. Harris was not injured.

At this time the westbound lanes are completely blocked. Bridge inspectors are on scene and will make a determination as to the bridge's structural condition when the scene is cleared.
