On June 22, 2004, a young woman had broke down in her car at the Salt Lick exit off I-64 when a white male stopped and offered her help. He told the victim that he had a wrecker at his home and would tow her vehicle to her home. He asked her to ride with him while he ran to get the wrecker. As they got onto I-64 she realized that he was not going to the location he told her the wrecker was located at. She asked him to stop and let her out, but he pulled out a knife and told her he would kill her if she attempted to get away. He also told her that he had a gun. He took the victim to Midway off of I-64 where he raped her three times. This lasted through the night and the next morning he left after taking her money. A passing motorist later picked up the victim on Interstate 64. At the time of this offense we had no identification on the male subject. Evidence was collected and placed into the DNA national database by the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab where it matched Michael Sheppard's DNA. Sheppard had one prior conviction of rape in Madison, AL and had been recently sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Sheppard was charged with kidnapping and found guilty in the federal court system. He is going through a trial Sept. 22, 2005, in Wilson County, Tenn. for robbery, kidnapping and rape that occurred in Tenn. He is suspected to have kidnapped a total of four women and raped three of them. Kentucky State Police has charged Sheppard with Rape 1 degree (three counts), Sodomy 1 degree, and Robbery 1 degree. A charge of kidnapping is also forthcoming.
