Fatal Crash on KY 1006 in Laurel County

(LONDON, KY) - On Thursday, December 14, 2006, at 9:30 PM the Kentucky State Police responded to a vehicle vs. a train traffic crash with injury on KY 1006 in Laurel County. Upon arrival KSP Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Mike Bowling and London City Police Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Chris Edwards determined that a 1991, Ford, Aerostar Van, driven by Mary Smith, 44, London, KY was westbound on KY 1006 (Levi Jackson Park Road) when it crossed the CSX Railroad tracks into the path of a northbound train. The van was struck in the left (drivers' side) rear and came to rest off the north side of the roadway. A 7 year old passenger of the van was ejected and received fatal injuries during the crash. The Child was pronounced dead at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner's Office. Three other juvenile passengers were transported to UK Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Bowling and Edwards continue the investigation and were assisted at the scene by members of the Kentucky State Police, the London City Police Department, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office, the Laurel County Coroner's Office, the London City Fire Department, The London/Laurel County Rescue Squad, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and the Laurel County DES.
