Shooting and Murder Investigation in Laurel County

(LONDON, KY) - On Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at 6:18 PM the Kentucky State Police responded to a shooting incident at 898 Sally's Branch Road, in Laurel County KY. KSP Detective Mark Allen determined that Edward Brian Whitaker, 32, Manchester, KY entered the residence of Benjamin B. Gilbert, 28, London, KY and was armed with a shotgun. Whitaker then shot Gilbert and fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later. Gilbert was taken to the UK Medical Center in Lexington, KY for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries at 8:56 PM. Whitaker was initially charged with Assault 1ST and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center in connection with the incident but the charge is expected to be upgraded to Murder. Trooper Allen continues the investigation.
