Fatal Fire in Floyd County Claims Two Infants Lives

(Pikeville, KY) - On Saturday,July 9, 2005 at 11:05 am EST, Post 9-Pikeville, received a call regarding a structure fire at Hamilton's Mobile Home Park in the Teaberry community of Floyd County. It was reported that two infant children were still inside the burning residence.

KSP Trooper Shaun Little arrived at the scene at approximately 11:24 am and found three mobile homes were engulfed in flames. Mud Creek Fire Department and Trooper Little located 11 month old female Shelby Yates and 1 month old male Joshua Yates deceased inside the residence. The parents Stevie and Evelyn Yates along with four other children were able to escape the fire. Although prior electrical problems had occurred, it is too early to determine if they were a factor in the fire.

The death and fire investigations remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Detective Kevin Newsome and Arson Investigator Don Parker. The KSP were assisted at the scene by the Mud Creek Fire Department, Left Beaver Rescue Squad and the Floyd County Coroner.
